I adore the Pillow Book -- the lists, the gossip, the everyday...all of it! She is the first blogger and although I can see how she was hard to deal with in her more immediate historical timeframe, today she reads beautifully.
Collage History of Art -- This is the first time I have encountered this text, and it is absolutely fascinating. It feels so intimate and sensual to me and at the same time I want more distance because it gives me the creeps a bit. The vignettes followed by the bursts of authority is a good tool here. It elevates the content of the whole piece and keeps me moving between being informed and being moved.
I feel less manipulated by the Pillow Book, primarily because I understand it is written by the person who experienced it. While reading Collage, I was constantly reminded that this was a presentation of a person, not the person himself presenting. That said, I do think that both succeed marvelously in taking me where they want me to go. Exquisite stuff!
